Hurghada vs Sharm El Sheikh: Which One is Better?

Every year, millions of tourists land in Egypt with the same question rattling around in their heads: Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh? Both are on the Red Sea. Both have coral reefs, warm water, and beach resorts. Both appear on the same travel comparison sites with nearly identical star ratings. And yet they are genuinely, fundamentally different places and the wrong choice can completely change the kind of trip you end up having.

Hurghada

Hurghada is a city that grew up around tourism and never really stopped growing. It stretches along the Red Sea coast for about 40 kilometers, and depending on which part you're in, it can feel like a quiet seaside town or a fully fledged resort strip with clubs, shopping centers, and waterparks. That variety is both its strength and its weakness.

Getting to Hurghada is easy. The international airport handles direct flights from most of Europe, and the city itself is well connected to Cairo by bus and car. Once you're there, everything is close together. The beaches, the dive centers, the restaurants, the markets Hurghada doesn't require the same level of planning that some other Red Sea destinations do. It's accessible in the truest sense of the word.

Sand, Swimming & the Sahl Hasheesh Bay

The beaches around Hurghada vary a lot. The city center area can feel crowded and the public beach access is inconsistent. But head north toward Sahl Hasheesh, and the story changes completely. The bay there is sheltered, the water is clear and shallow, and the sand is the kind of fine pale stuff you see in magazine photographs. Several upscale resorts have private beach stretches here that are genuinely impressive.

For families, Hurghada is hard to beat. The gentle gradient of the water, the abundance of child-friendly resorts, the shallow reef snorkeling nearby  it all adds up to a destination that works well for people who want a beach holiday that's uncomplicated and enjoyable rather than adventurous and rugged.

Giftun Island and Beyond

Hurghada's reefs close to shore have suffered over the decades from proximity to a busy city the boat traffic, the development, the sheer number of snorkelers. But don't write it off. Giftun Island, a national park about 30 minutes offshore by speedboat, has two dive sites that remain in excellent condition. The coral gardens are healthy, the fish life is abundant, and the visibility on a calm morning is routinely 20 meters or better.

Where Hurghada really earns its reputation among serious divers is as a departure point for live-aboard trips. The Brothers Islands and Daedalus Reef, several hours south by dive boat, are among the finest big-animal diving spots in the world. Oceanic whitetip sharks, thresher sharks, hammerheads in season, and manta rays. If you're willing to invest in a week-long live-aboard, Hurghada is your gateway to all of it.

Hurghada works best for: families, first-time Red Sea visitors, divers using it as a hub for offshore trips, and anyone who wants a fully stocked resort experience without a lot of effort.

Sharm El Sheikh

The iconic, world-class diving capital of the Sinai Peninsula

Sharm El Sheikh feels different the moment you arrive. It sits at the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula, surrounded by bare desert mountains on one side and the Gulf of Aqaba on the other. That landscape  rust-red peaks dropping straight into electric-blue water gives Sharm a drama that Hurghada simply doesn't have. It's a more purposeful destination. You don't just pass through Sharm. You go there for a reason.

The resort infrastructure in Sharm is polished and mature. The hotels in Naama Bay and the newer Sharks Bay area are well run, the roads are clean, and the city has a distinct promenade culture people walk the strip in the evenings, eat late, and linger in a way that feels genuinely Mediterranean despite being in Sinai. It's more international than Hurghada in character, though these days both attract a wide mix of European tourists.

Naama Bay and the Turquoise Gulf

Naama Bay is the heart of Sharm's beach scene and it's genuinely beautiful. The bay is calm, the water is warm year-round, and the color that specific turquoise-shifting to deep blue  is the kind of thing that makes you understand why people built cities here. Sharks Bay, slightly north of the main strip, is calmer and less crowded, and has the added bonus of a shallow coral garden just offshore  snorkelers here can be in the water within five minutes of leaving their sunlounger and immediately surrounded by reef fish. It's the kind of easy, immediate access to marine life that makes Sharm special even for people who have no intention of ever putting on scuba gear.

Ras Mohammed and the Walls of Sinai

This is where Sharm separates itself. The diving here is genuinely extraordinary, and not just by regional standards by global standards. Ras Mohammed National Park, at the southern tip of Sinai, protects some of the most vibrant reef walls in the world. The Shark and Jolanda reefs drop hundreds of meters into the abyss, the coral coverage is dense and colorful, and the fish biomass the sheer number and variety of fish living in the water is something that experienced divers describe with the kind of reverence usually reserved for places like the Coral Triangle.

Visibility in the Gulf of Aqaba is exceptional. On a clear morning with calm conditions, 30 meters of visibility is routine. You can see the entire architecture of a reef wall, from the surface to where the eye loses it in the dark blue below. That visibility changes the experience of diving in a way that's hard to articulate until you've felt it yourself.

The Tiran Straits, just north of Sharm, offer a different kind of dive stronger currents, bigger pelagics, open-water encounters with barracuda schools and occasional hammerheads moving through in the thermocline. For divers who've been doing gentle reef dives for years and want something with a bit more adrenaline, Tiran delivers.

Sharm works best for: divers of all levels, couples, photographers, and travelers who want a destination that feels intentional somewhere you go to dive and be by the sea, not just to lie on a beach.
