Salah El Din Citadel
Salah El-Din Citadel is one of the well-known military forts from the Middle Ages. It sits in a key spot, so it overlooks Cairo and Al Fustat. Because of that, it had a real defensive role. The fort was built in the 12th century. It helped protect Cairo from the Crusaders. Later, it was also used as a seat of power under the Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans.
Mohamed Ali Mosque
Mohamed Ali Mosque is the highest point inside the Cairo Citadel. Mohammed Ali Pasha started building it in 1830. Work continued until he died in 1848. The outside style was influenced by the Sultan Ahmad Mosque in Istanbul. Today, the mosque is a major Islamic landmark in Cairo.

Sultan Hassan Madrassa and Mosque
Sultan Hassan Madrassa and Mosque is an important example from the early Mamluk era. It was founded between 1356 and 1363 AD. The mosque was built using very large stone blocks. These stones became a clear sign of the peak of Mamluk building work during that time.
Al Rifa’i Mosque
In Cairo, you can also see the Al Refaie Mosque. It was built by Khoshiar Hanim, who was the mother of Khedive Ismail. Work started in 1869. It finished in 1911. But construction was not steady. It stopped for about 25 years, from 1880 to 1905. The mosque became a burial place for members of Mohamed Ali’s family.
Ibn Tulun Mosque
The Ibn Tulun Mosque is the oldest and one of the biggest mosques in Cairo. It was built between 876 and 879. Ahmed Ibn Tulun ordered the project after he was named governor of Al Fustat by the Abbasid Caliph. Inside, you can spot Abbasid design details. The mosque also has many decorated arches. The courtyard is very large, and it feels open and calm.
Al Muizz Street
Al Muizz Street is a main road in the old parts of Cairo. Walking there can feel like moving through many layers of history. The street became well known during the Fatimid period. It dates to the 10th century. Over time, it gathered famous sites, old relics, and historic homes.
Khan El Khalili Bazaar
Khan El Khalili is a well known bazaar in central Cairo. It began as a major trade area during the Mamluk time. The bazaar goes back to the 14th century. Later, it filled with small shops and eateries. One example is El Fishawy, which is often named the oldest café in Cairo.
