06:00 AM – Hotel Pick-Up & Journey to Dendera
Get picked up from your hotel in Marsa Alam by your tour guide. Start the drive to the Dendera Temple. The total distance is 220 kilometers. This includes 60 kilometers from Marsa Alam to Safaga and 160 kilometers from Safaga to Dendera. There will be a break in the desert during the trip.
08:30 AM – Arrival & Tour of Dendera Temple
Arrive at the Temple of Hathor and explore the site with your expert Egyptologist guide.
Highlights Include:
Find out about a temple mostly built during the Late Ptolemaic period. This was the time of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra VII. There are also additions from the era. The front of the temple has a hypostyle hall built by Emperor Tiberius.
Look at reliefs on the outside walls. These show Cleopatra VII and her son Caesarion also known as Ptolemy XV dressed in Egyptian clothes. They are offering sacrifices.
Walk through the sanatorium. This was a healing center where people came for cures. They used waters, unguents and healing dreams given by the goddess Hathor.
10:30 AM – Drive to Abydos Temple
Leave Dendera and travel north to the sacred archaeological site of Abydos.
11:15 AM (approx.) –. Tour of Abydos Temple
Explore Abydos. This was one of the sacred religious sites in ancient Egypt. It was a place for pilgrims going to the afterlife.
Highlights Include:
Visit the Memorial Temple of Seti I. This temple was completed after his death by his son, Ramesses II.
See the Abydos King List. This is a list showing the names of most of the pharaohs from Menes to Ramesses I.
Look at the very well-preserved wall reliefs at the back of the temple. These are among the best in Egypt. Also visit chapels dedicated to important gods before the Amarna period. These include Ptah, Re-Harakhte, Amun-Re, Osiris, Isis, Horus and Seti I himself.
02:00 PM – Lunch
Enjoy an Egyptian lunch near the Abydos temple complex.
02:45 PM – Return Drive to Marsa Alam
Get back in your vehicle for a trip back to your hotel, in Marsa Alam.
