Meet your tour guide after breakfast at the hotel. Then we will leave for your day trip to Alexandria, a major city on the Mediterranean coast. Alexandria is in Egypt and is often called the second-largest city in the country. The name links back to Alexander the Great, the Macedonian ruler who took control of Egypt in 332 B.C.
Places to go in Alexandria
Start with Pompey’s Pillar. It is the last pillar left from an old Roman temple. That temple was known in ancient times as the Serapeum.
Next, visit the Citadel of Qaitbay. The Mamluk rulers built it to protect the coast along the Mediterranean. The site is tied to the old lighthouse of Alexandria, which was once counted among the seven wonders of the ancient world, though it no longer stands.
After that, go to the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. This is Egypt’s biggest Roman cemetery. The place has three levels of burial spaces. Many chambers and tombs were cut into the rock below the surface. You can also see detailed burial work from a wealthy family that had both Roman and Egyptian roots.
Then you will see the Bibliotheca of Alexandria. It is an impressive place.
The old library was not just a store of texts. It also worked as a center for study and investigation in the ancient world. Scholars came there from different places. It was said to include about 8 million books.
The new Bibliotheca is one of Alexandria’s key modern projects. It sits along the sea boulevard, facing the water. It is meant to feel like knowledge is rising over the Mediterranean from Alexandria.
