Gabal Al-Tayr: One of the Most Important Holy Family Sites in Egypt
The flight of the Holy Family is one of the most significant, intriguing, and ancient mysteries of Egypt. According to the Gospel of St. Matthew, Mary, Joseph, and the young Jesus had to flee Jerusalem to avoid the persecution of King Herod. Hence, they escaped via the desert border to Egypt. The journey took more than 3.5 years, and the family crossed over 3,500 km of coastal sand, the Nile delta, the streets of Old Cairo, and the rocky hills of Upper Egypt.
Although Coptic Cairo offered them urban safety, and the Nile delta provided a safe landing, the Gabal Al Tayr or the Mountain of the Birds is considered the most beautiful, miraculous, and sacred place on the flight of the Holy Family. This rocky massif overlooks the Nile valley from a height of several tens of meters. Gabal Al Tayr is a real historical and religious treasure. Below is all you need to know about the history, miracle signs, and monasteries associated with this special place.
The History and Geography of the Mountain
To begin with, the mountain has a unique natural and historical heritage. Its location is situated 20 km to the northeast of Minya and near the town of Samalut. The mountain got its name from the countless number of birds that could be seen on nice days, perched on top of the rocky perches. In older times, the Middle Egyptian countryside differed significantly from the Delta region. To the east of the Nile, there is a rocky desert along the banks of the river; the most prominent example of this is Gabal Al Tayr in the Minya Governorate.
Mary, Joseph, and Jesus reached the cave in the mountain in the first century AD. They were returning from a long journey through the desert when Joseph led the way to the caves, where Mary and Jesus were able to hide from the cruel Roman. The family was tired, and the desert sun shone mercilessly over the rocky landscape of the Middle Nile. Fortunately, the mountain cave provided a cool shelter for the Holy Family.
Sacred Traditions, Miracles, and Monasteries
This mountain has played a special role in the history of Christians for more than twenty centuries. Popular traditions, supported by both Gnostic and Coptic sources, highlight the miraculous events that happened there. When the family was returning from Egypt to Palestine, they passed through this area on a boat. According to the Coptic tradition, the large rock formation on the mountain began to roll down onto the boat. Virgin Mary screamed in fear, but young Jesus stopped the falling rock with his hand, preventing further motion. Thus, the palm print of Jesus was imprinted on the stone, and the miracle happened.
The miracle site has been preserved and is known as Kaff El-Adra or the Palm of the Virgin. According to tradition, the rock formation stopped right above the boat, and the Virgin Mary was so frightened that she pressed her hand to her heart. After the rock fell to the ground, the print of Jesus’s hand was visible on the stone. Thousands of years later, the Palm of the Virgin became an object of worship for local people and attracted many tourists.
Holy Well of Fresh Water
According to tradition, while staying in the cave, Virgin Mary asked her son Jesus to give her some fresh water to drink. Jesus pulled out some water from the rock formation, and the well was formed. Today, the well is part of the monastic cells complex and is ready to offer its blessing to all visitors.
The Church of the Virgin Mary
The most famous building associated with this mountain is the Church of the Virgin Mary. Built over the cave where the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and Jesus stayed, the Church of St. Mary is an ancient rock-hewn complex. Empress Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, built this church in 328 AD. Having learned about the cave where Jesus stayed, Helena decided to honor the memory of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and ordered the construction of an exquisite rock-hewn church directly above the cave.
Inside the Church of the Virgin Mary, you can see the architecture typical of Coptic Christianity. The rock-hewn churches of St. Mary have a crypt, which is a cave where the Holy Family spent the night. To reach the crypt, you have to go down a short stone spiral staircase. In addition, the subterranean church has a breathtaking view of the Nile valley. Most importantly, the crypt is a prime example of an ancient rock-hewn architecture, with stone pillars separating the main chamber from the side aisles.
The Church’s Rock-Cut Architecture
Besides the crypt, the Church of the Virgin Mary has unique rock-hewn constructions. Stone pillars and arches made of rock cuttings create a stunning view. Experts say that the rock-hewn churches were a marvel of their time, employing thousands of workers and taking months to build. Today, these constructions are an extraordinary example of ancient engineering.
In the Church of St. Mary, you can also find some rare Coptic icons, including the images of the flight of the Holy Family, the Mother of God, and the Archangel Michael. In addition, masterfully carved mother-of-pearl screens and many other holy relics are exhibited in the crypt.
Gabal Al Tayr in Tourism and Modernity
Gabal Al Tayr has been undergoing a thorough restoration to become one of the twenty-five largest sights on the route of the Holy Family. The government has taken great efforts to restore the rock-hewn Church of St. Mary. Soot-blackened rocks have been removed from the crypt, and modern lights have been installed to highlight the rock-hewn constructions in the church. In addition, road signs have been installed, and viewing platforms built for the convenience of modern tourists.
Gabal Al Tayr hosts one of the largest local festivals known as the Festival of the Arrival of the Holy Family. In addition to the many visitors, this religious event traditionally attracts thousands of pilgrims who come to the celebration in the evening. The annual event is scheduled to be held at the end of May or the beginning of June.
A Few Notes for the Prospective Visitors
To experience the magic of this place, it is essential to know the visiting hours and pay attention to tourist details. First, please note that the church is located on the east bank of the Nile and is about 20 km to the northeast of the city of Minya. Second, you can get there from central Minya by car or bus via the Eastern Desert Highway or the Cairo-Asyut Agriculture Road. The drive from Minya takes about 30 minutes, and the journey to the mountain overlooks the Samalut bridge over the Nile. The best time to visit Gabal Al Tayr is between October and April; the weather in mid-October to mid-April is most comfortable for visiting Egypt. If possible, it is best to arrive at the mountain in the morning and enjoy the magnificent view of the Nile Valley.
Since the Church of St. Mary is a sacred building, it is vital to dress modestly when visiting the Church. In addition, it is necessary to observe the traditional visiting hours of the crypt and not disturb the monks who live in the monasteries on the territory of the mountain. Although the government has taken good care of this site, you need to remember that the Church of St. Mary is a place of prayer and needs to be treated with respect.
