Desert Trip Egypt: Fayoum, Wadi El Hitan & The White Desert
Set off on a 3-day trip through the desert near Cairo. You will see many kinds of landforms and learn about rocks and time. The days are for close looking and slow downtime. Nights are quiet and full of stars.
Your route includes:
Faiyum Oasis and Qarun Lake
Start at Faiyum Oasis. Then visit Qarun Lake and walk around the older shoreline area before you head farther into the sand.
Wadi El Hitan, also called Whale Valley
Go to Wadi El Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage place. You can spot marine fossils from far back in time. Ancient whale bones are found in the desert sandstone.
Wadi El Rayan and its water drops
Stop at Wadi El Rayan. This area has freshwater lakes, waterfalls, and wide dunes with warm golden tones.
Bahariya Oasis and the Black Desert
Travel to Bahariya Oasis next. You will take a 4x4 drive over volcanic hills. Expect dark rocky ridges and peaks.
Crystal Mountain and the White Desert
Continue toward Crystal Mountain, where quartz looks bright. Then reach the White Desert National Park with its chalk shapes. Finish with camping at night and watch the sky.
Itinerary
Day 1:

You start your day with a driver who meets you at your Cairo hotel. From there, you travel to the Fayoum Oasis, heading southwest through quiet roads and open land.
Your first stop is Qarun Lake. It is a large saltwater lake and feels calm and open, like a true break from the city.
After that, you stop for lunch in the same area.
In the afternoon, you visit Wadi El Hitan, also called Whale Valley. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for ancient marine fossils. Next, you go to Wadi El Rayan. Here, you can see lovely waterfalls and wide sand dunes.
You stay overnight in Fayoum.

Day 2:
Bahariya Transfer – Black Peaks and Camping Under Stars

Right after breakfast, you start heading into the Western Desert. You will transfer to Bahariya Oasis along the way. When you arrive, lunch is served. After that, you jump into your 4x4 and begin the ride.
The route goes through the Black Desert. You will pass tall peaks that look dark and burned. Later, you drive through the rock shapes of the Valley of Agabat. Then you stop at Crystal Mountain, where the surface looks like it is full of glitter.
In the end, you reach the White Desert National Park. You will make camp there for the night. The monuments are bright and chalk like, and the sky above is wide and open.

Day 3:
White Desert Dawn – Oasis Springs and Return to Cairo

Take your last breakfast at the quiet White Desert camp. Then you will start the final walk around the famous White Desert rock shapes. After that, you will head back toward Bahariya Oasis.
Next, stop at the English Mountain viewpoint. This will be your last wide view of the area. You can also sit and unwind at the Hot Springs. After you eat lunch in Bahariya, you will drive back to Cairo and end the trip.
